MY YACHT WORTH?
The Nordic Tug 34 is a tug cruiser with a rich pedigree. It is the culmination of 35 years of evolving enhancements of its predecessor, the highly successful Nordic Tug 32 that launched in 1985. The Nordic Tug 32 was popular because it provided owners living space to cruise for longer periods, with the systems and equipment needed for comfortable adventure, but in a size easily managed by short-handed crew.
But to compare the two tug yachts is unfair, as the Nordic Tug 34 is noticeably better and more comfortable and efficient in every way. The new tug benefits from decades of improvements in materials and technology, as well as experience gained from thousands of cruising miles. It is safe to say the Nordic Tug 34 is an entry portal into luxury cruising, with yacht quality fittings and equipment in a layout that makes for comfortable living aboard.
Nordic Tugs’ familiar, Lynn Senour-designed hull is a semi-displacement hull shape that provides a smooth ride and the hull’s hard chines make for stability at anchor and at the dock. Like all Nordic Tugs, the boat is capable of planing speeds above 13 knots with its standard 270hp single diesel, but it cruises most efficiently at trawler speeds, with great fuel economy, long range, and the relaxed ride we’ve come to expect from Nordic Tugs.
The cockpit is an easy transition from the integral swim platform and ringed with stainless steel railing for protection. A built-in cockpit locker houses the boat’s propane tank with extra storage space, and a large lazarette space is accessed via a cockpit hatch.
Stepping down into the spacious saloon with an L-shaped galley on the port side, complete with everything to prepare meals, Standard galley equipment and optional upgrades allow for any number of galley arrangements: two-burner propane stove, induction cooktop, microwave/convection oven, dual refrigerator and freezer. The large stainless steel sink is set in a full length acrylic solid counter with covered backsplash and sea rail, surrounded by stunning Sapele cabinetry and trim. The large work surface and equipment in this galley will not disappoint.
Opposite the galley is an L-shaped settee with movable Hi/Lo table. This settee will convert to a double berth if necessary and there is ample storage under the seating. The entire saloon is trimmed in attractive Sapele wood. Additional cabinets and lockers complete the wonderfully comfortable living space.
Two steps up from the saloon is the pilothouse, the command center of the Nordic Tug 34. As is found on all Nordic Tugs, visibility is outstanding, either seated on the helm benches or standing at the helm. Pilothouse doors on both sides of the helm allow for ventilation under way and easy access to side decks for docking and locking through a canal. The helm console and overhead cabinetry provide plenty of real estate for all kinds of navigation electronics, engine and thruster controls, radios, and monitoring displays. Running the boat from this helm inspires confidence.
The forward accommodations include an island berth, and the head has a roomy separate shower. This is most appreciated by couples who spend weeks and months aboard. Cruising on this boat is not camping.
The boat can be ordered with a flybridge for fair weather cruising in warm weather, which comes complete with a second hydraulic steering station, duplicate engine controls, helm seats, and a sundeck railing package. In fact, the list of optional equipment and features available for the Nordic Tug 34 guarantees that each owner gets their Nordic Tug 34 exactly as they want it.
If one plans to cruise the Pacific Northwest, optional heat from a diesel-fired heating system would make lots of sense. For those planning adventures in warmer climates, air conditioning and a generator will be the way to go. A stern thruster in the keel is an option, as are a fire suppression system, oil changing system, and many of the comfort and control systems one finds on larger cruising boats.
Whatever your cruising plans, the Nordic Tug 34 is a well-built proper yacht that can take you on any adventure you can dream. Its low profile and modest draft make it ideal for the Great Loop and its variations. It can be a fine winter home in the islands, spend summers in New England, explore the Inside Passage, in a safe and well-built boat with all the comforts of home.
