Nordic Tugs 50 Details

Most agree that a bigger boat is better for families, living aboard, and extended cruising. Yes, they require additional skill and experience to handle with confidence, but larger boats make all the difference between comfortable and self-sufficient cruising and a minimalist experience savored only by the young.

In the Nordic Tugs family, the Nordic Tug 50 is a prime example of a larger yacht that satisfies bigger boat objectives. And it is proof that the respected builder does not rest on its laurels, as the original Nordic Tug 49 has been updated with new features and is now known as the Nordic Tug 50.

This tug yacht began as a fresh design by Howard Apollonio, who took over design duties when Nordic Tugs’ Lynn Senour passed away in 2004. Apollonio retained the trademark profile and character of the semi-displacement hull form but updated the hull in subtle ways. He added flair to the bow, raised the forward hull chines, and incorporated a propeller tunnel in the hull to allow for shallower draft with a flatter shaft angle. The boat is sea kindly under way, economical, and efficient in its normal speed ranges with a single 610hp diesel engine.

The Nordic Tug 50 represents decades of refinement and is an especially fine choice for today’s cruisers. Adding to an already proven platform, the new yacht continues to excel at long range and economy, and offers conveniences that owners expect in a modern cruising yacht.

The salon is a liveaboard dream. The living space with chairs and a large L-shaped settee with table also serves as a comfortable dining room. The U-shaped galley is sure to please with a complete complement of domestic appliances and ample work surfaces. There is more than enough cabinets, drawers, lockers, and overhead storage.

The 50-footer’s pilothouse is a real wheelhouse, with chart table and pedestal helm chair at the helm console. There are drawers and lockers to store radios, binoculars, night vision, chart books, cruising guides, and remotes. A large U-shaped settee is set back behind the chart table. Like all Nordic Tugs, the vertical pilothouse windows are a trademark of the yacht’s design and provide excellent visibility.

An inside stairway leads from the pilothouse up to the boat deck and optional flybridge. The large boat deck is ideal for kayaks as well as a larger dinghy. An electric davit and crane make dinghy handling easy and safe for a short-handed crew.

The optional flybridge is a complete helm station and social center with additional seating for everyone to enjoy under way or at anchor. It is easy to imagine running a canal system, the Gulf Stream, and inland waterways from this vantage point.

The swim platform is wide and integral with the hull. This hull extension offers great utility for handling dive gear, as well as pets and people coming aboard from shore or dinghy. And it is just a couple of steps into the spacious cockpit through a wide transom door. The cockpit is largely covered by the overhead boat deck and a great place to have coffee in the morning or relax with friends at the end of the day.

The accommodations are spacious and complete. The midship master stateroom takes advantage of the full beam and is elegantly finished in African Sapele hardwood. The large, ensuite head is exceptionally roomy.

The guest stateroom is forward in the bow, and there is considerable storage surrounding the centerline island berth. The stateroom has its own head with shower.

New in the Nordic Tug 50 is an optional three-cabin layout that places an additional guest cabin in the accommodation plan. By cleverly reconfiguring the forward spaces, the midship master and guest staterooms can be further separated with a smaller guest cabin that has additional sleeping accommodations for guests or crew. The guest cabins share a single large head with separate shower.

Owners with larger families will appreciate this additional cabin. And those who invite friends to help crew on longer legs of an adventure, such as getting the yacht in position to begin the Great Loop or deliver the boat up or down the coast, or home from a distant port, will particularly enjoy the new third-cabin layout on the Nordic Tug 50.

A capable yacht demands headroom in the engine room. There is excellent access on all sides around the single engine, and systems have access for service. The craftsmen at Nordic Tugs take great pride in precise wire and cable runs, and they showcase their expertise with each plumbing and machinery installation. It inspires confidence to spend time in this engine room, accessed by a hatch in the saloon or through the watertight door into the lazarette.

While a couple can get by on a smaller cruising boat for local cruising, the new Nordic Tug 50 makes sense when spending months in Alaska or winters in Mexico or the Islands. Or when one wants to simply spread out when on the water. Why be challenged by limited storage when provisioning or be forced to live in small spaces? The Nordic Tug 50 has plenty of room for kayaks, SUPs, and other cruising essentials that won’t fit on a small cruising boat.

If extended living aboard is your plan, or embarking on adventures that span weeks, the Nordic Tug 50 is a great choice to consider as your next yacht.

It is perfect for just about any adventure one can imagine in North America. And beyond…
