Beth Steinkoenig is our Seattle Yachts Sailing Academy School Director since November 2021.
She is currently celebrating her 40 year sailing instruction career which began at the University of Edinburgh Department of Physical Education on Loch Tay in the U.K. She graduated from Colorado State University in Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation in 1985, and since then has taught under the certification programs of Royal Yachting Association (RYA), USYRU now US Sailing, and American Sailing Association (ASA) as well as Outward Bound, Red Cross Sailing programs and many small boat centers. As lead instructor and school director she built programs in Colorado, San Diego, Marina Del Ray, Santa Barbara, Portland, Seattle, Bellingham, Friday Harbor and Anacortes. As an American Sailing Association Instructor Evaluator, since 2009, she has certified hundreds of ASA instructors and thousands of students in beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. She has written the curriculum currently utilized for three prominent schools in the northwest. She also taught school for ten years as a credentialed Washington State school teacher (K-8) specializing in environmental education and taught home school afloat programs on her gaff-rigged schooner out of south Seattle and Bainbridge Island during the peak of the covid pandemic. Beth is a licensed US Coast Guard 100GT Captain and has cruised from Bermuda to Essex, Connecticut, Seattle to Hawaii, Channel Islands, California, Orkney Islands and off the Yucatan Peninsula and 35 years in the Pacific Northwest. She has owned three boats and has predominantly lived aboard since 1988, raising her son aboard for the first ten years of his life.
Beth is passionate about her recreation career telling her students that the word "recreation" means to re-create. She is one person at a time helping people create a new path in their lives in the wake of a sailboat. She is excited to be building this new school with Seattle Yachts. She is busy training new instructors, developing our coastal navigation curriculum and incorporating RPBA, Recreational Powerboat Association courses this year to support our SailTime and PowerTime membership programs. Meanwhile, she is introducing a whole bunch of new students to a life on the water! She is looking forward to developing this new community of water enthusiasts right here at SailTime/PowerTime Anacortes.
