Nimbus Chief Designer Talks About The New 12-Series
What Is The Nimbus 12 Series?
The Nimbus 12 Series is the next generation of Nimbus’s 40-foot platform, building directly on the proven 11 Series hull and layout. It introduces three closely related models, each tuned to a different style of boating:
- Weekender 12 (W12) – a social, overnight-capable day cruiser for extended weekends.
- Tender 12 (T12) – an open walk-around for flexible day boating, adventure runs, and “do-it-all” family use.
- Commuter 12 (C12) – a protected, all-weather commuter and fast cruiser designed for year-round operation.
All three share key updates: a new extended swim platform, redesigned helm seats, fresh exterior styling with more polished stainless accents, and a host of behind-the-scenes improvements to lighting, ventilation, and service access.
The 12 Series is aimed squarely at experienced boaters who value Scandinavian design, thoughtful functionality, and real-world reliability—whether you’re running up the Inside Passage, hopping between Catalina and the Channel Islands, or chasing good weather along the Chesapeake.

What are the key upgrades of the Nimbus 12 series?
1.) Extended swim platform & exterior styling - One of the most obvious changes is aft:
- New extended swim platform with double-mould construction that’s structurally integrated into the hull, not just bolted on. This brings you physically closer to the water, makes boarding easier, and adds space for gear, water toys, and relaxing at anchor.
- Thicker stainless-steel railings and updated hull décor that now incorporates a polished stainless Nimbus logo. The result is a sharper, more upscale look that still reads very “Nimbus” at a glance.

For Seattle Yachts customers, that means a more usable platform for swimming in the San Juans, paddleboards in SoCal, or a tender and toys in the Bahamas - without sacrificing the clean Scandinavian aesthetic.
2.) Completely reimagined helm seats & ergonomics - Nimbus has reworked the helm environment across all three models:
- Custom Nimbus helm seats with enhanced lateral support and improved ergonomics reduce fatigue on longer passages.
- Layout tweaks, lighting updates, and better sound routing make the helm quieter, more comfortable, and easier to live with over a long day offshore.
If you regularly run from Anacortes to Victoria, Los Angeles to Avalon, or Annapolis to St. Michaels, these refinements genuinely matter - less fatigue, better sight lines, and a more relaxed journey.

3.) Smarter tech & propulsion options - Under the skin, the 12 Series also gets significant tech and driveline upgrades:
- Mercury Joystick Piloting with integrated bow thruster (available with outboards) for intuitive low-speed maneuvering and system monitoring.
- Volvo Penta inboard options on Commuter 12 and Tender 12, with an available assisted docking package that adds joystick-style control.
- Optional hydraulic swim platform for outboard models that doubles as a water-level “beach” and a passerelle when Med-moored or docked stern-to.
- Improved windscreen wipers and illumination for better visibility and ambiance in real-world conditions.
On Tender 12 specifically, Nimbus now allows twin Mercury V10 425 hp outboards, opening the door to even higher touring speeds and reserve power when you want it. All three models retain Nimbus’s air-lubricated twin-stepped hull, known for its efficiency and dry, predictable running at 40+ knot speeds when properly powered—exactly the kind of performance you want when the forecast turns out “spicier” than expected.
