The Dehler 46 SQ is a flagship 46-foot performance cruiser that sharpens the already-acclaimed Dehler 46 with a stiffer, lighter structure and smarter ergonomics - true to the brand’s “Speed & Quality” brief. Designed by Judel/Vrolijk, it combines a powerful 9/10 rig (with Competition and carbon-mast options), efficient deep-keel choices and a grippy single rudder with a clean, shorthanded-friendly cockpit: German mainsheet with traveler or an optional arch that moves the mainsheet overhead, a composite bowsprit with bobstay for Code 0s and A-sails, and a flat-deck furler for a low, efficient headsail tack. Below, the refreshed interior is bright and flexible—three cabins, two heads, a seaworthy L-galley and abundant stowage—supported by sensible systems, generous tankage and a 57 hp Yanmar (80 hp optional). Quick in light air yet composed when pressed, the 46 SQ appeals to owners who want one boat to club-race midweek, cruise with family on weekends, and cover miles efficiently in between.
Seattle Yachts is proud to be official representatives of Dehler Yachts on the west coast of the U.S. With offices in Seattle, Anacortes, San Diego, and throughout California, our team is uniquely experienced to help you through the entire process of building your own new Dehler.
What changed with the “SQ” upgrade
Stiffer, lighter structure. The 46 SQ moves to a vacuum-infused epoxy/vinylester hull with a foam core and a laminated carbon keel matrix tying rig, keel and mast loads together. The result is a hull that feels tighter in a seaway and copes better with higher rig loads.
More power in the rig. A deeper “Competition” keel, deeper rudder, and the option of a taller carbon mast (with rod rigging) add horsepower when you want it. A flat-deck headsail furler lowers the drum, lengthens luff and cleans up sightlines.
Usability upgrades. A composite bowsprit with bobstay adds proper tack points for Code 0s and gennakers and integrates the anchor. Fold-up helm footrests, lighter remote-controlled bathing platform, and optional cockpit arch (to move the mainsheet traveler out of the cockpit) sharpen the cruising experience.
Brighter interior. Larger hull windows and additional coachroof openings, new lighting concepts, and layout tweaks yield a lighter, airier saloon.
Design & construction
Built under Dehler’s high-load philosophy, the 46 SQ blends vacuum-infused epoxy over a Divinycell core with bulkheads bonded to both hull and deck for stiffness; a carbon keel matrix distributes loads from keel and rig efficiently. This isn’t cosmetic marketing—on the water the SQ felt lighter, stiffer and more powerful than the earlier 46.
Dehler aims the 46 SQ a notch above mass-market cruisers and into the premium performance-cruiser bracket (think X-Yachts, Arcona, Elan), and the build spec supports that ambition.
Deck, cockpit & sailhandling
Clean working cockpit. Standard fit includes German mainsheet with traveler, adjustable genoa tracks, and properly placed winches. Optional powered winches are now available. The helm gains folding foot braces for security at heel.
Traveler options. Racers will appreciate the cockpit traveler; cruisers can spec the arch to move sheet & traveler overhead—safer with family aboard and a handy anchor for a sprayhood.
Rig & headsails. A 9/10 Seldén, keel-stepped twin-spreader mast is standard; the Competition package adds height and can be paired with a carbon rig. The flat-deck furler and bowsprit with bobstay are set up for efficient code sails and proper luff tension.
Foredeck & anchor handling. The bowsprit integrates the anchor roller, feeding chain into a deep well; a large forward deck locker swallows sails and fenders.
Performance under sail
Yachting Monthly’s full-blown Solent test sailed the boat in gusty F5–6. Highlights: 8–9 knots close-reaching under white sails, nudging 10 knots bearing away, a solid groove upwind at about 30° AWA, and a grippy deep single rudder that never lost traction when properly trimmed. The helm lightens dramatically once the backstay and headsail halyard are dialed in—classic performance-cruiser feedback.
For heavier weather the SQ can fly a removable inner-forestay staysail; for lighter air the bowsprit welcomes Code 0s and A-sails. These options broaden the usable wind range without over-canvassing the boat.
If you want harder numbers, the standard rig’s SA/D is roughly 22–23, rising to ~25–26 in Competition spec—right on target for a boat that mixes cruising duty with club racing.
Interior: bright, practical, configurable
Layouts. Standard plan: forward owner’s cabin with island berth and en-suite with separate shower; L-galley to starboard; large saloon; day head; and two aft cabins—starboard double plus a port cabin configurable as a double, twins, or single with extra storage.
Ambience & details. Tall headroom, a long overhead handrail, generous fiddles, and opening coachroof windows with outward-hinged panes improve ventilation and practicality at sea. Dehler’s Scenario Light System provides dimmable ambient lighting.
Systems & access. The 57 hp Yanmar (80 hp option) sits under the companionway; on the SQ the saildrive is ingeniously moved forward under the steps to free berth space without sacrificing access. Fuel ~200–210 L; water 450 L—good numbers for cruising independence.
Why sailboat owners love it
1.) Serious pace without drama. The SQ’s stiffer hull and stronger rig turn breeze into speed, yet the helm stays predictable and the boat rewards good trim—fun to push, forgiving to cruise.
2.) Two boats in one. Traveler, German mainsheet, towable cars and proper bowsprit make it a credible weeknight racer; arch, powered winches and generous tanks make it a capable cruiser.
3.) Single-/doublehander friendly. Clean line runs, flat-deck furler, fold-up footrests and cockpit ergonomics reduce workload—exactly what shorthanded crews want.
4.) Bright, flexible living spaces. Enlarged windows, multiple saloon/chart-table configurations, and a choice of aft-cabin layouts suit different crews—family, friends, or race team.
5.) Premium build for the category. Infused epoxy laminate, carbon keel matrix and Category-A rating place the 46 SQ in the upper tier of performance cruisers.
6.) Future-proof options. From the carbon rig to a tall Competition package, you can spec the boat to local wind ranges and ambitions.
If you want a 46-footer that sails like a big sportboat when pressed yet lives like a modern cruiser—and you value methodical German engineering over flash - the Dehler 46 SQ is compelling. The upgrades aren’t just decal-deep; they make the boat stiffer, faster and easier to handle, while the interior becomes brighter and more adaptable for real crews. That’s exactly why owners end up sailing it more often, in more conditions, with bigger grins.
