Used Boston Whaler Boats For Sale

If there is one boat name that instantly brings alive memories of youthful adventure on the water, it is Boston Whaler. The generation that grew up in the 1960s was all about summer fun, coconut oil, the beach, and tooling around in a Boston Whaler Montauk. Everyone approved of the Montauk’s quality, low maintenance, and indestructible construction. Parents let their kids run around in Montauks knowing they was on a safe boat. Great for fishing, exploring, and general fun on the water, they could be found in every lake, coastal area, and waterways in the U.S.

Developed in the 1950s by Dick Fisher in association with C. Raymond Hunt, the project took advantage of the newly invented polyurethane foam that replaced balsa core material in boat building. The design spiral and prototypes culminated in the Boston Whaler 13, introduced in 1956.

The first boats were the Whaler 13 and the well-known Montauk, which was 16 feet 7 inches long. Filled with foam these boats were lighter than other boats, completely unsinkable, and could be powered by lower horsepower outboard engines. Despite the introduction of larger models, these two Whalers remained the most popular through the 1980s. Many childhood and teenage memories featured a Whaler, which was almost ubiquitous with summer fun and fishing.

Most adult boaters remember the 1961 ad which first ran in Life magazine and showed Dick Fisher sitting high and dry in a Boston Whaler 13 that had been cut in half. This unsinkable feature remains in Boston Whalers today and exceeds the U.S. Coast Guard requirements for positive flotation in all motorboats under 20 feet.

The original manufacturer, Fisher-Pierce, was bought and sold several times from the late ‘60s through the early 1990s, eventually finding a permanent home when Brunswick Corporation bought the Boston Whaler operation in 1996. The brand has thrived ever since.

Boston Whalers were primarily sold for recreational use, although the boats’ unique qualities and rugged construction made them perfect for use by the Navy SEALs and Coast Guard during the Vietnam War for river patrol and rescue operations.

This utility continues today, and one will find Boston Whalers used by most every police and fire department that has water access in their jurisdiction, as well as the Navy, Marines, and many other federal agencies. Their ruggedness, low maintenance, and unsinkability make them the standard for many mission requirements.

The underlying principles at Boston Whaler have always been quality construction, product innovation, and a longevity that spans generations.

Brunswick Corporation also own Mercury Marine, so it is a perfect match to equip each new Boston Whaler with a new Mercury outboard engine or two…or three, or four, such as the standard quad 300hp outboards on the 405 Conquest cabin cruiser.

The current lineup of Boston Whaler models spans a full range of boats from 11 feet up to 42 feet, with enough different models and features to keep owners in the Whaler family for life. There is a Boston Whaler for every purpose and phase of life.

Starting with small skiffs through numerous models of center consoles, and finally with larger cuddly cabins and cabin cruisers in the Outrage, Conquest, Vantage, and Realm lines. The Boston Whaler legacy has stood the test of time with satisfying performance. They have proven themselves as ideal fishing machines, comfortable cruising boats, and wonderful tenders for exploring near shore.

And they last and last.

There is a high degree of customization one has when ordering a new boat. With many hull and detail color choices, the option list is long. Options like SeaDek cockpit flooring, dive tank holders, refrigeration, summer kitchens on larger models, ice makers, even water makers installed by the factory. One can get a boat perfect for a family’s needs.

In addition to its partnership with Mercury Marine, Boston Whaler works closely with trusted companies for its fully integrated electronics packages. One can select from the wide suite of Raymarine electronics, Navionics digital charting, Fusion sound systems, and NAUTICAL-ON vessel monitoring systems.

One only needs to attend a boat show (or watch a YouTube boat tour) to see how far this company has developed its line of boats. Look at a model in the middle of the line, say a new Outrage, and compare it to the first Outrage introduced in the early ‘70s. It is a night and day comparison and shows just how far Boston Whaler has evolved its products. The new Outrage has many details that are fabulous for a fishing machine, yet it is appointed like a fine yacht.

Fishermen will drool over the pulley system to control the outriggers, the bait wells and cooled fish tanks and cockpit station for handling the catch. Others will love and appreciate the teak trim on the bolstered helm seats, the herringbone flooring in the cabin, LED lighting throughout, the sculpted upholstery, fold-down seating, twin boarding doors, air conditioning at the helm, and all the latest technology to navigate, manage controls and systems, and enjoy an unmatched boating experience.

If there is one boat company that defines American ingenuity, continuing innovation, and rock-solid construction, in a line of boats that bring pleasure boating to the next level, it is Boston Whaler.

It’s all in the company’s tagline, the Unsinkable Legend.
